The pursuit of what is true and the practice of what is good - our philosophy

We get our hands dirty

Our approach to projects is evident immediately. We roll up our sleeves and get to work unearthing deep user insights to give our clients a better understanding of their customer as quickly as possible. We aren’t afraid to venture outside of our comfort zone or wear multiple hats to ensure that we arrive at the right answers to the right questions for our clients.

We help things grow

Our management philosophy is team‐based rather than hierarchically structured. While we focus on our areas of interest to gain deep insights – we also cross‐pollinate and work in interdisciplinary teams as a part of our company culture. From our physical office space which is designed with multiple collaborative areas, to our work processes, we foster collaboration on our team and with our clients. We help bring three perspectives to the table when facing every major design decision: the business/market drivers, the technological feasibility, and of course, the user experience priorities.

We remember that we all hold the earth in the palm of our hands

We actively look for ways to reduce our carbon footprint – both as individuals and as partners with our clients. From the small things – like planting trees for Friends of Trees, a nonprofit organization here in Portland – to large impact efforts like helping design green products or products that enable households and corporations to monitor their energy consumption – Empirical is committed to counteracting the affect humans have had on the environment.

We advocate work-life balance, it is good for the community

Call it European or community activism but at Empirical we stronly feel that we all need to focus more energy on our planet, community and relationships. To accomplish this, Empirical's full-time work week is 32 hours and in order for our employees to qualify they are required to volunteer within the community.
